Household-Level Consumption in Urban Ethiopia: The Impact of Food Price Inflation and Idiosyncratic Shocks* Draft

چکیده
Using panel data on urban households, we investigate which groups were most vulnerable to the large food price shocks that occurred between 2004 and 2008 in Ethiopia. Econometric results for consumption growth models and for a model of the perceived severity of food price shocks indicate that the type of household most vulnerable to the food price inflation has few household members, a high dependency ratio, and is headed by a casual worker without education. One policy implication is that aid programs can achieve more, in terms of mitigating the adverse effects of food price shocks, if targeted at households with some or all of these characteristics.

Household-Level Consumption in Urban Ethiopia: The Impact of Food Price Inflation and Idiosyncratic Shocks
We use survey data to investigate how urban households in Ethiopia coped with the food price shock in 2008 and idiosyncratic shocks. Qualitative data indicate that the high food price inflation was by far the most adverse economic shock between 2004 and 2008, and that a significant proportion of households had to adjust food consumption in response. Regression results indicate that households w...

This study aims to evaluate the effect of sentiments on Iran's economy through a New Keynesian Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model in a closed economy. In this study, the coefficients of the proposed model are calibrated and estimated using the quarterly data of Iran's economy from 2004 to 2015. It shows that in the presence of sentiment, how stochastic impulses affect the main macroec...
متن کاملGrowth, Shocks and Poverty during Economic Reform: evidence from rural Ethiopia, by Stefan Dercon. March 13, 2002
Using micro-level panel data from villages in rural Ethiopia, the paper studies consumption and poverty changes to analyse the determinants of growth and poverty changes during a period of economic reform (1989-97). Consumption grew and poverty fell substantially, but with diverse experiences across villages and individuals. During this period common and idiosyncratic shocks mattered for consum...
متن کاملThe Impact of Monetary Policy Shock on the Price of Storable Goods: A Case Study of Food
In many economies, commodity price volatility is one of the sources of signaling to market players. Different experiences of price shocks have led economists to reconsider price shocks. Considering the effects of monetary policy on the inflation rate, the present study investigates the impact of monetary policy shock on the price of storable food commodities. In this regard, data for 2006: 01 t...

Iran has experienced high food prices in recent years. This paper examines the welfare impacts of rising major food groups' prices on Iranian urban households using Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) approach. The elasticity coefficients derived from QUAIDS are used to estimate Compensated Variations (CV).The study uses Iranian Household Expenditure and Income Survey (HEIS) raw data,...
